Underground Storage Tank (UST) Removal and Closure, NGVA Statewide, 2012 -2014, David Short, Matthew Thompson, Pamela Coleman

GECO was contracted to remove and close numerous USTs at Virginia Army National Guard locations across the Commonwealth of Virginia.  We were proud to be a part of a focused effort by NGVA-FMO-EN staff to remove all USTs that had exceeded their life expectancy and were fueling inefficient heating and hot water systems. The project included removal and disposal of the UST along with all piping and vents, preparation of a Closure Report in accordance with VDEQ guidelines and repair excavated area with clean fill, seed and straw.  GECO has removed and closed USTs at the following Readiness Centers; Blackstone, A.P. Hill, Lexington, Sandston, Lynchburg, Leesburg, Woodstock, Manassas, Radford, Martinsville, Petersburg and Clifton Forge.

Energy Efficiency Upgrades for Heating and Hot Water Systems, NGVA Statewide, 2012 -2014, Matthew Thompson, Pamela Coleman

GECO was contracted by DMA to make numerous energy efficiency upgrades to heating (boiler) and hot water systems at several Readiness Centers across the Commonwealth.  In conjunction with fuel oil UST removals, GECO replaced the outdated, inefficient fuel oil equipment with updated propane or natural gas equipment.  Installing new tankless “on-demand” condensing hot water heaters increased efficiency and met or exceeded Readiness Center hot water demands.  In addition, modifying the Readiness Center heating system burners to propane or natural gas increases efficiency and utilized a cleaner burning fuel source.  GECO has performed energy efficiency upgrades at the following locations; Lexington, Lynchburg, Leesburg, Woodstock, Manassas, Pulaski, and Clifton Forge.

Fueling Station Closure and SCR, NGVA, AP Hill Readiness Center, 2013-2014, Pamela Coleman

GECO was contracted to remove the two (2) 6,000 gallon diesel USTs at the AP Hill Readiness Center fueling point, perform the necessary investigation, and submit a Closure Report to VDEQ.  The investigation resulted in minor DRO contamination in the soil associated with the fuel point.  VDEQ subsequently requested an SCR be conducted at the site.  GECO scoped, planned and executed the SCR and provided VDEQ with justification that ultimately resulted in the closure of the site with a no further action designation.

Sediment Basin at Spoil Site S1 at MTC Fort Pickett, Williamsburg Environmental Group, Inc. (now Stantec), 2012-2013, Daniel Proctor

GECO constructed a sediment basin and installed long-term erosion control measures in accordance with the Erosion and Sediment Control Plan for the S1 Spoil Site.  This projected included the construction of a construction entrance, sediment basin with outfall structure,  diversion dikes, and a stormwater conveyance channel, and the installation of EC-2 and EC-3 matting, silt fencing, class 1 riprap for outfall stabilization site seeding.  GECO personnel also conducted the regular VSMP inspections required during construction and for long-term operation of the site.

Stormwater Culvert Upgrades, MTC Fort Pickett, 2013-2014, David Short

GECO replaced/repaired twenty-nine (29) culverts on MTC Fort Pickett.  The culverts were constructed in accordance with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation Handbook and design parameters provided by Williamsburg Environmental Group.  The culvert replacements succeeded in protecting stormwater quality, accomplishing erosion and sediment control goals and constructing infrastructure improvement on MTC Fort Pickett.

Dust Suppression, Calcium Chloride Application, MTC Fort Pickett, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013, David Short

GECO has completed dust suppression application (spraying calcium chloride) to over thirty (30) miles of Fort Pickett training roads.  GECO successfully applied the precise application rates required by Fort Pickett personnel and provided a hard copy and digital version of a map depicting the training roads where the product was applied.  GECO provided all GIS data on a CD for inclusion into NFVA Enterprise Geographic Information System database.

Statewide Recycling Material Pick-Up, NGVA Statewide, 2014-2015, Matthew Thompson

This project consisted of contacting each Readiness Center or FMS to inquire if they had any recyclable materials (Light bulbs, batteries and fire extinguishers). The materials were picked up and brought to Fort Pickett Recycling Center for reuse.  Eleven different locations (Phase 1) across the Commonwealth have been completed.
