Conservation Program: Our staff has received training from the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) on erosion and sediment control practices. GECO understands the importance that DMA and Fort Pickett place on E&S issues and can assist with the design and implementation of erosion and sediment control plans and best management practices (BMPs). Additionally, GECO personnel have both educational backgrounds and practical experience in areas concerning threatened and endangered species management and flora and fauna surveys conducted on Fort Pickett.
Examples:
Fort Pickett and SMR (Camp Pendleton) Environmental Awareness Guides, NGVA, 2012 and 2014, David Short, MAJ Jaycee Shaver, Pamela Coleman (Picture Below)
GECO personnel completed awareness guides for both Ft. Pickett and SMR. NGVA-FMO-EN staff identified the need for an awareness guide that could be issued to outside and internal training unit personnel. The guide details specific environmental procedures that training units are required to follow. The guides provide information about key facilities, billeting, MWR, range operations, fueling operations, aviation operations, natural/cultural resources, waste turn-in, recycling, trash disposal, spill response and check-out checklist.

Nottoway River Water Quality Survey, MTC Fort Pickett, 2011, Kenneth Oristaglio
GECO conducted a survey to provide a basic indicator of the water quality of the Nottoway River Macro-Basin and provide recommendations for enhancing water quality. Recommendations and best management practices (BMPs) were developed for inclusion in the INRMP. Six sites along the Nottoway River on MTC Fort Pickett property were sampled on a monthly basis and following one storm event, for a total of eight sampling events. GECO personnel identified the sampling locations, conducted the field work and sample collection and presented the data and recommendations in a final report.
Phase I Archaeological Survey - Eight Tracts (142.6 acres), MTC Fort Pickett, 2010, Hylton Haynes
GECO performed this Phase I survey on eight separate tracts of land that were proposed for forestry operations. The survey and report were in accordance with Virginia Department of Historic Resources guidelines and the NGVA Archaeology Department Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). As required, the Phase I survey was reviewed and approved by the Virginia State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO).
